What goes into making and getting you website up and running?

With Web design, like other services, you don’t always get what you pay for. High price is no assurance of good design or a result that was intended for your site. You could get ripped off if you don’t know what you are buying. Launching a Web site is a process that involves several types of activities. Depending on the nature of your site, those activities will include some or all of the following and depending on the activity should be done by the client, hosting company or web site developer:

  • Setting up the hosting server to accept requests by the registering authority that your domain name will be hosted on that hosting server.
  • Registering you domain name (giving yourself a unique “address” on the Web, such as yourbusiness.com)
    • Register with local authority for .co.za
    • Register with one of the international authorities for international domains (for instance .com, co.uk, etc)
  • Set up the hosting account with the specifications of the chosen hosting package:
    • Setup physical space and instances for storage
    • Setup FTP Accounts
    • Setup E-Mail settings
      • Setup E-mail accounts
      • Setup E-mail forwards, aliases, MX records, etc where necessary.
    • Setup allowed limitations
      • Amount of E-mail address
      • E-mail quotes
      • Amount of disk space to use
      • Bandwidth limits for the month
      • Etc
    • Setup databases and starting files where necessary.
  • Design your web site:
    • Use business color schemes provided by the client
    • Designing Web pages (similar to typesetting and laying out a newsletter)
    • Designing artwork (creating original artwork for the Web site)
    • Writing the editorial content for the Web site
    • Programming a database to work on the Web (for mailing lists, surveys, catalogues, customer sales data, and so on) where necessary.
  • Setup designed site on the hosting server:
    • Using FTP to transfer files.
    • Use Database / Import facilities when using CMS
    • Apply optimization to make your site search engine friendly
    • Generating sitemaps for internet search engines.
    • Setup your statistics for your site.
  • Register your web site with internet search engines like Google, MSN (Bing), etc.
  • Hosting the Web site on an ongoing basis.
  • Marketing and promoting the site (on the Web and offline)
  • Advertising (on the Web and offline)
  • Maintaining the web site on an ongoing basis
    • Updates
    • Changes.
